Dr Cheryl Butler talk is titled ‘Ascupart’s Children – Black History in the greater Southampton region 1500-1900’ drawn from archival material in Southampton and Hampshire’.

In looking at ways to respond to the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower, Southampton wanted to reflect on responses to migration in the centuries following the events of 1620. It was particularly keen to explore what archives and materials survive which reflect the history of BAME communities.
