Event description: Tithe Barns were structures used throughout Britain to store produce paid as ‘tithes’, a religious tax. Joseph Rogers outlines the history of these buildings from the medieval period through to modern day, whilst highlighting a number of relevant barn buildings local to Hampshire and surrounding counties. He’ll also explain the confusion and misconceptions associated with the term ‘tithe barn’ and finish by giving examples of how such barns have been modernised and reused for a variety of interesting and unusual purposes today.

Speaker:

Joseph Rogers is the author of Tithe Barns and Railway Enthusiasm in Twenty-first-century Britain. He visited his first tithe barn in 2014 and in 2019 spent the year exploring over 100 barns across the UK, from Cornwall to Scotland, Wales, Kent and everywhere in between.
