Michael Gunton

Michael Gunton is Senior Archivist with the Portsmouth Library and Archive Service. He read Modern Languages and after graduating decided to work in archives. After working as a volunteer at the Worcestershire Record Office he trained as an archivist at Liverpool University.

He started work at the Norfolk Record Office and after a few years was appointed to a position at the Portsmouth City Records Office, as it was then called.  Since then he has undertaken a range of role and responsibilities as his career has developed.

When the Records Office and Museums Service in the city merged in 1994, he became the Collections Manager for the new joint service. He was closely involved in 2004 in the D-Day 60 events and in 2005 managed the city’s programme of events to mark the end of the Second World War.

Since the Arthur Conan Doyle Lancelot Green Bequest of 2004 he has been closely involved with the documentation and development of this iconic collection.

In 2014 the Portsmouth Library and Archive Service were able to create a new long-awaited archive store that met national standards. Michael designed the store and oversaw the layout of the collections.
