A retired professional archivist with 37 year archives experience, and senior management responsibility.
Sue came to work at Southampton Archives in 1986 and stayed until her retirement in 2016.
While at Southampton she developed a number of new services including records management and led on various archives and museums partnership projects. Many of these involved liaison and negotiations with lead organisations in the archives and museum sector.
From 2008 her role changed from archives manager to collections manager with responsibility for archives and other heritage collections, and Southampton’s art collection too. The Chipperfield Bequest (a registered charity) funded much of the art acquired and this involved in liaising with the Charity Commissioners.
She has been a Hampshire Archives Trust Trustee since 1990 until her retirement as the representative of Southampton City Council, and subsequently as a private individual.
A love of history led her to archives in the first place and the thrill of seeing and reading material written centuries ago remains; enabling researchers and students to find that special connection with the past is immensely satisfying and one in which the Trust pays a special role.
