Recent research studies on surviving coroners’ inquests by Prof Steven Gunn have identified the main causes for sudden and unexpected deaths in the sixteenth century. This talk will consider unusual causes of death in Hampshire including the prosecution of inanimate objects, traffic problems & dismemberment … to name a few.

Dr Cheryl Butler is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and Honorary Fellow of the University of Winchester and is a member of the editorial board for the Southampton Records Series and the Hampshire Papers. Her particular period of study is the sixteenth century and she has published many books and articles on the period and runs training in palaeography.
