HAT has awarded £500 in grant aid to Wherwell History Group to support their initiative to display a catalogue and photographs on their website with corresponding memorial descriptions (approx 600 items). This will be of immense value to family historians, especially those contacting the Group about a family grave.
The Wherwell History Group was formed in 2008, their main objective is to research, record and preserve the history of the parishes of Wherwell and Chilbolton, and maintain an archive of sound recordings and written or photographic material. Their archive is constantly expanding, either through contributions from local village people or contact via their website or contact via Facebook. As at September 2024, the archive has nearly 900 folders and the Facebook group has over 525 members. The archive comprises lots of village photographs and postcards from many and varied sources, some village scrapbooks (1951 to 2005 and 2010), some oral interview (video) recordings, gravestones and memorial inscriptions for both village churches and many, many newscuttings.
The website has two integrated archive catalogues – a main one (with over 1000 items) and a secondary one (290 items) dealing with the Chilbolton Wall Hanging see their website https://www.wherwellhistory.com
