This is a free lecture on the way Hampshire celebrated the birthday of ‘Mad George, George III.


Refreshments will be provided from 7.00 p.m.

The lecture will be from 7.30 to 8.30 p.m.

During his  60-year reign, the King’s Birthday, celebrated on 4 June, was seen as a major high spot of the social calendar.

The lecture examines and assesses the reactions and practices in Hampshire, endeavouring to provide answers to certain key questions. To what extent did the celebrations change over time? Were there differences between celebrations in Hampshire’surban, rural and naval and seaport communities? To what extent did institutions (e.g. the church and some of Hampshire’s leading schools) participate in such celebrations? S

James Thomas retired from the University of Portsmouth as Reader in Local and Maritime History in September 2018, after 50 years at the institution and its predecessors. An early modern historian, his research interests embrace Hampshire’s social and economic development, and the county’s maritime life in the 17th and 18th centuries.

He has published  six books and contributions to four others, three Portsmouth Papers and a Petersfield Paper and c. 150 journal articles. He has served on the Councils of the British Association for Local History and the Navy Records Society.
