Houghton Lodge, a Grade II listed building, is one of the finest and earliest surviving example of a Cottage Ornée (French for decorated cottage). Cottage Ornée often features well shaped thatch roofs with ornate timberwork, ‘picturesque’ Gothic architecture that flourished for about 25 years from 1790. Houghton was thought to be designed in 1790 by John Plaw – one of the pioneers of the style – and was probably intended as a fishing lodge. With extensive fine trees and lawns sweeping down to the banks of the River Test, it is arguably one of the most beautiful privately owned historic houses and gardens in Hampshire.
Entry includes access to both the house and the gardens, including an opportunity to learn about the history of Cottage Ornée, the architecture and landscape design. You will also have an opportunity to see the beautiful rooms and hear the stories and history that have been part of the house since it was built in 1793.
We will gather at the house at 1:45pm for house tour that will commence at 2pm that will last about an hour , followed by an opportunity to wonder around the garden and the14 acres of picturesque countryside and water meadows. Cream tea will be available at 4pm, though the cost for this is in addition to the £32, numbers and cost to be confirmed nearer the time.
