Event description: In this beautifully illustrated talk, we will explore Jane Austen’s experience of walking, from where she walked and what she wore to how she navigated muddy lanes during the winter months. By looking at her letters, contemporary conduct books, and the potential risks to walking women, we’ll uncover whether Austen herself followed social convention when she stepped outside and understand what walking meant to her personally.

Speaker: Nicola Pritchard-Pink has an extensive background in English social history during the long eighteenth century, spanning literature, landscapes, country houses, tourism, and women’s domestic music. She is the author of ‘Dibdin and Jane Austen: Musical Cultures of Gentry Women’ in Oxford University Press’ 2018 book Charles Dibdin and Late Georgian Culture which explores Austen’s use of Charles Dibdin’s songs in domestic performance.

She has wide-ranging experience of working in the heritage sector, from running a National Trust stately home with its priceless Georgian collection, to working in Hampshire Record Office for over a decade. During her Masters in Eighteenth Century Studies at the University of Southampton she specialised in 18th century country house gardens and Jane Austen’s song collection, culminating in a sell-out lecture-recital in Hampshire. As a regular speaker at academic conferences she has presented papers on a broad range of Georgian social history topics across the UK and Europe, and she is currently researching her book on Jane Austen’s experience of walking.
