HAT has awarded £500 towards the project ‘Conservation and Heritage in Gosport. A joint illustrated book publication project between The History Press of Cheltenham and The Gosport Society’
The forthcoming book (Easter 2023) will be the printed outcome of Project 18 (informed conservation publication) of the Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) programme of Historic England established under ‘partnership’ arrangements. See this site for more detail https://gosporthaz.org.uk/ The prestigious HAZ status for Gosport was granted to the borough by Historic England in 2019 and will conclude in 2024. This book, along with artifacts and developments from 21 other projects, will complete the outputs and requirements of the full HAZ programme established for Gosport. The book will recorded for posterity and put into the wider public domain the work of this 5 year project.
The aim is
i)To record in print and photographic images, as a legacy volume, the outcomes of conservation and heritage projects designed to rejuvenate the borough of Gosport.
ii) To reveal to an interested public the extent to which repurposing of former ‘Defence of the Realm’ buildings from different historical periods can create improved social and economic opportunities for residents.
iii) A published and comprehensive telling of ‘The Story of Gosport’ including The Diving Museum at Stokes Bay; Explosion – The Museum of Naval Firepower at Priddy’s Hard; and the Royal Navy Submarine
