In 2025 HAT awarded Grayshott Heritage a grant for their book ‘Grayshott’s Wartime Memories’. It has proved to be a great success. The 600 copies printed have all been taken up, and many villagers have come forward with their own family stories to tell. Some of them are quite incredible. To preserve these ‘new’ stories, and to continue promoting material from our archive, they will publish a second volume.
Now in 2026 HAT has granted £500 towards the project for volume 2 which is also funded by East Hants District Council, a donation and the group’s own funds
It will continue the wartime history of Grayshott and its villagers. As for the first volume, it will be a 64-page, high-quality, colour booklet produced in 600 print copies for free distribution, plus an online version. It will be a collection of contemporary and current villagers’ memories and stories, based upon our archive material, eye-witness accounts, interviews and other local sources. In this new book we add somewhat to Volume 1’s description of wartime village life, but we lean more towards relating individual’s stories.
The project is on schedule to publish in September.
