If you have a Hampshire local history story or a favourite archive, museum, or library item or collection you would like to share with us, our blog is just the place for you!
To submit a blog post, please follow these guidelines:
Choosing your topic
Your topic should focus on Hampshire archives and/or wider museum and library collections, which tell the story of the county and its cities, towns, and villages. Your piece could also examine a particular type of collection, item, or object which has been significant in your research and how people can use these materials to research Hampshire’s history. We are also looking for pieces on aspects of Hampshire local history, family history, or community history from the medieval period to the present day.
Blog posts can also focus on projects or events in Hampshire that you have been involved in, including reviews of HAT events, workshops, or outings.
Length of the blog post
Blog posts should be between 1000 and 1500 words.
Editing your blog post
Your blog needs to be clear and easy to read. Any unfamiliar terms should be fully explained – imagine that you are writing for a non-specialist audience. Before sending your blog post to us, please check for grammatical and spelling errors. Accuracy is also important, and any names, places, or dates included, should be precise.
Images
Images for your blog post should be 600px by 600px or 600px(width) by 400px (height), but we can accept a maximum size of 1000px by 1000px. Please ensure that your image is not less than 300px in height or width, as these will become pixelated when uploaded to our website. Any image that you send to us, should not be any larger than 1.5MB in size.
We would like one image that is square in shape and that be used as the leading or featured image. This will then be used both as the leading image for the post and the thumbnail in other pages like the home page. If you are supplying a number of supplementary images, these will look better in the page if they are consistent in shape whether that be square, landscape or portrait.
Copyright
Images are a great addition to a piece but please ensure that you are adhering to copyright legislation and the conditions assigned to images. It is important to ensure that you have the correct permissions to use images that you supply us with. A good place to start looking for images, for example, is Creative Commons, which includes what the copyright conditions are.
We also encourage you to draw from other peoples’ work and literature around your topic but do please make sure that you attribute the work to the author. We are also happy for you to include any additional literature that you read in a ‘Further Reading’ section.
Author Copyright
Authors will hold the copyright to their blog posts, with the agreement that Dr Daniella Gonzalez, Hampshire Archives Trust’s Social Media Fellow, has permission to edit and review these pieces prior to publication on the Hampshire Archives Trust website. All contributors will be consulted about revisions made and edits suggested, and Daniella will work closely with them to prepare the piece for publication.
Submitting your blog post
When sending your blog post, we ask that you provide a photograph of yourself and a few lines about who you are so that, as well as seeing your names, readers can see who the work is attributed to. If you have a Twitter handle or a personal website, we are also happy to include this in your profile.
