Update on Hampshire Archives Survey – December 2024

HAT has recently completed stage 1 of its survey of holders of archives in Hampshire.  In preparing for the survey preliminary research identified over 200 likely holders of Hampshire archives including yours. The list in itself is thought to be of substantial use to researchers. This will be up on our website shortly.

Out of 200 requests to complete the survey 55 organisations responded. These identified a total of 5.8 million items  with  varying levels of cataloguing , digitisation and access to the public.

Notes

  • The museum of the Royal Navy contribute some 2 million photos and 700,000 documents
  • Newsquest owning such titles as the Hampshire Chronicle adds one and three quarter million items
  • Hampshire Cultual Trust contribute 100,000 archaeological documents.

Of the items 58 % is stated as having been indexed /catalogued and 11% digitised.

Only two organisations stated that the public had online access to a full catalogue and all digitised content.
