A key finding aid for the archives of Winchester College is Sheila Himsworth’s, meticulously indexed Winchester College Muniments, published in 3 volumes. Winchester College Muniments: A Descriptive List, Vol. I, compiled by Sheila Himsworth,, Chichester, 1976, covers documents relating to the foundation of the college and it subsequent management. Included are small collections of documents relating to New College, Oxford, St Elizabeth’s College (the adjacent collegiate college acquired in 1544), and a few items on the City of Winchester. Volume I also includes the composite estate records – such as manor court books and indexes to copyholders. This volume is prefaced by lists from the late 14th century of the bishops of Winchester (to 1903), the wardens of New College, Oxford (to 1903), and dignitaries of the college: the wardens (to 1903), headmasters (to 1911), second masters (to 1011), annual bursars (to 1862), stewards (to 1949) and high stewards (1546-1641).
