Despite its name, HIAS is concerned with both industrial archaeology and industrial history of mills, breweries, brickworks, transport, and the like. It grew out of the Southampton University Industrial Archaeology Group (SUIAG) whose main focus was on surveys, restoration and preservation of industrial sites. Although this is no longer the prime purpose of HIAS, it acts as an informal umbrella organisation for associated groups who are involved in these activities. It holds monthly speaker meetings (in Hedge End) and occasionally arranges visits to places of interest. It also publishes the HIAS Journal (1992 to date), and a twice-yearly newsletter, Focus. Short reports of meetings from 2015 are available on their website, as are PDFs of all editions of the HIAS Journal except the current one.
HIAS is a member of the South East Region Industrial Archaeology Conference (SERIAC), and takes it in turns to organise an annual regional conference.
