In this webinar, Dr Alistair Dougall will explore how the English Civil War involved and affected the people of Hampshire.

Although there was only one major battle in the county together with a number of sieges, there were numerous skirmishes across the county and the Hampshire people were not spared the enormous human and financial costs of the war. Using contemporary accounts, Alistair’s talk will look at the impact on families of quartering soldiers from both sides and of plundering, robberies, impressment, intimidation and attacks, and at how, by the end of “these unnatural wars”, many had had their houses and livelihoods utterly destroyed.

Having qualified as a barrister, Alistair Dougall worked in business in London for several years before returning to university to do a degree, Masters and then PhD in History. While doing his doctoral research, he taught students at both undergraduate and M.A. level at the University of Southampton. He later turned his PhD thesis into a book, and he has written for BBC History magazine and given a number of talks to local history societies. Between 2002 and 2021 (when he retired from teaching), Alistair taught History at an independent girls’ school in Salisbury, where he was Head of Sixth Form and Head of History for several years. Alistair has been a Trustee of Hampshire Archives Trust since 2021.
