The talk will explain briefly the aims of the VCH and then consider some medieval and modern sources for writing VCH parish histories in 2023. The biggest change since the original Hampshire Red books were published before 1914 is the study of ordinary people, for example by reading 16th century wills and inventories, which recorded possessions on death and allow the reconstruction of early modern lives. Another enormous change was the opening up of local sources, above all through the development of the county record offices.
Speakers: Dr Jean Morrin and Dr John Hare
Dr Jean Morrin lectured at the University of Winchester from 2002-12 and has been running Hampshire VCH volunteer project since 2008. She wrote Steventon (2016) and co-authored Mapledurwell (2012) for the project.
Dr John Hare spent his career teaching history at Peter Symonds’ College. His research interests focus on medieval economic and social and architectural history, and archaeology. His publications include books on late medieval Wiltshire and Battle Abbey. He wrote Basingstoke: a medieval town (2017) and contributed to three other volumes for the project.
